Fears are escalating over the potential for a significant nuclear incident as Russia deploys drones and missiles along a flight path near the decommissioned Chernobyl power plant in northern Ukraine. With the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster approaching this Sunday (April 26), Ukraine’s top state prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko has raised concerns that Russian hypersonic missiles have been flying over the Chernobyl site and the Khmelnytskyi nuclear plant in western Ukraine since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
General Kravchenko disclosed that thirty-five Kinzhals, a type of missile, have been detected within approximately 12 miles of the Chernobyl facility or the Khmelnytskyi plant, with 18 of them passing by both locations on the same route. He emphasized that these actions are not driven by military strategy but are clearly intended to intimidate and spread fear.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been monitoring military activities near nuclear power plants and attacks on crucial electrical substations that play a vital role in nuclear safety. The IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi, has expressed deep concerns about the risks posed by such military activities to nuclear safety and security. The agency has called for utmost caution and restraint in the vicinity of nuclear facilities to prevent the possibility of a nuclear accident.
