A candidate from Reform UK running in the upcoming Senedd election in Wales has expressed concerns that an increase in free childcare hours for parents could lead to a surge in abuse cases in nurseries. Martin Roberts, representing Reform in the Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr constituency, suggested that mothers might regret not caring for their babies themselves. He also emphasized traditional gender roles, stating that women typically nurture while men are providers.

These statements by Roberts come as various political parties in Wales have promised to expand childcare services in the lead-up to the May 7 election. Reform UK, however, has not outlined any specific childcare policies in their election agenda.

Although Reform has not directly addressed Roberts’ comments, the party criticized Plaid Cymru, stating that they have their own issues to address based on social media posts from some of their past and present candidates.

Roberts’ remarks are linked to allegations against another Reform candidate, Mark Lawrence, who reportedly preferred supporting women staying at home to care for their children over investing in childcare services. Plaid Cymru’s candidate Heledd Fychan denounced Lawrence’s views as outdated and inappropriate during a recent hustings event.

Responding to Fychan’s statements about the event, Roberts defended Lawrence, suggesting that an increase in nursery workers due to extended childcare hours could potentially lead to risks of abuse. He highlighted the importance of parental care and expressed skepticism about entrusting babies to caregivers, given the potential for harm.

When questioned about his insinuation regarding nursery workers, Roberts argued that the demand for additional staff under certain childcare policies could inadvertently introduce individuals with malicious intentions into the system. He emphasized the nurturing role of women and the traditional dynamic of men providing for the family.

In response to queries about Roberts’ comments, a Reform spokesperson criticized Plaid Cymru, citing instances of inappropriate behavior by some of their candidates. The spokesperson suggested that Plaid’s track record was questionable, implying they lack credibility on certain issues.
