Renowned Spanish bullfighter, José Antonio Morante Camacho, known as Morante de la Puebla, sustained a severe injury during a bullfight at La Maestranza bullring in Seville. The incident occurred when the bull, named ‘Clandestino’, gored Morante, causing a 10cm wound to his rectum. Morante was knocked down by the charging bull, leading to the injury as he tried to evade the animal’s attack.
Video footage captured the moment the bull’s horn made contact with Morante’s buttock, resulting in a visible tear in his clothing. He was in distress on the ground and had to be carried out of the ring by fellow bullfighters. Earlier in the event, Morante had also suffered a minor injury when a bull grazed his ear.
Following a two-hour operation, medical reports revealed the extent of Morante’s injuries, describing a 10cm wound on the anal margin with damage to rectal muscles and a perforation of the rectal wall. Doctors conducted a specialized surgical procedure at the bullring’s infirmary to address the injuries.
The incident has raised concerns about Morante’s well-being and cast a shadow over the event. Prior to the incident, Morante had made headlines by cutting off his traditional bullfighter’s coleta, a move that generated anticipation for his return to the ring. Despite the setback, Morante had been making a comeback with appearances at various festivals before the unfortunate bullfight that drew a crowd of 12,000 spectators.
