Jon Kortmansky was away on a business trip when his wife Lori stumbled upon the home of their dreams. Enchanted by its charm, Lori placed the highest bid they could afford in 2005, even before Jon had seen it in person.
Recalling the moment, Jon describes the one-bedroom apartment in New York’s Upper East Side with its captivating almost black wooden floors as the turning point. Lori, an interior designer, poured her heart into transforming the space into a unique sanctuary. A decade later, they expanded by acquiring the adjacent unit, merging them into a three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment with a 240-square-foot balcony.
Their life together flourished. Jon’s legal career allowed them to travel extensively and enjoy winter weekends on the slopes. Despite their busy schedules, Lori, Jon’s college sweetheart, had a secret battle with brain cancer since her 20s, shared only with him.
Their love story began at Indiana University, evolving from friendship to romance. Jon fondly remembers Lori’s radiant smile that lit up any room, her unwavering positivity, and her ability to see the good in everyone.
After two years of marriage at 25, Lori started experiencing troubling symptoms leading to a devastating diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor the size of a plum. Facing a critical decision just after her diagnosis in 1998, the couple chose to forego starting a family due to an experimental treatment that would render her infertile.
Throughout the years, Lori bravely battled multiple recurrences, brain surgeries, and radiation treatments, keeping her illness private from many. She defied all odds, establishing her own business, learning French, and exploring the world despite her deteriorating health.
Jon marvels at her resilience, recalling how she engaged in daring activities like skiing, even after a stroke left her with a limp. Her determination and zest for life inspired all who knew her.
Lori’s health eventually declined, and Jon became her primary caregiver during her final months. The financial strain and emotional toll were immense, but Jon tirelessly cared for her, enduring injuries in the process.
Lori passed away in April 2021, leaving Jon shattered. Struggling to cope with the loss, he found solace in memories scattered throughout their home, making it challenging to move on. Overwhelmed with grief, he experienced debilitating headaches and avoided returning home, seeking refuge elsewhere.
With guidance from his sister, Jon embarked on a journey to rebuild his life, eventually finding a new home that brought him peace. He let go of the past, storing Lori’s diaries and mementos, focusing on creating a new chapter for himself.
Today, Jon is embracing life once more, dating, making new memories, and honoring Lori’s legacy by living fully. He cherishes the past but looks forward to a future filled with hope and happiness.
