As the Foreign Affairs Committee initiated an investigation into disinformation, the primary goal was to comprehend the global threat it poses. Through our examination of international scenarios, we discovered striking similarities within the UK.

Disinformation, characterized by spreading verifiable falsehoods and sowing seeds of uncertainty, is the favored tool of hostile nations. This conclusion is detailed in our latest publication, “Disinformation diplomacy: How malicious actors aim to undermine democracy.”

Our findings revealed a concerning lack of resources and funding within the Foreign Office. While the department concentrates on countering Russian disinformation in Europe, support for allies in addressing similar threats elsewhere is lacking.

The UK’s assistance to Moldova against Russian interference serves as a successful example. Witnessing firsthand the vital aid provided by the UK Government in countering disinformation in Moldova emphasized the importance of supporting allies facing such challenges.

Despite progress in Moldova, the battle against disinformation continues globally. Russia has shifted its focus to influencing elections in Armenia, indicating an ongoing pattern of malicious actors enhancing their information warfare tactics.

To effectively combat this evolving threat, a sustainable, long-term strategy is imperative to enhance the UK’s defense against disinformation both domestically and internationally. The current fragmented approach requires consolidation through the establishment of a National Counter Disinformation Centre to inform the public and collaborate with media and civil society organizations.

Preserving impartial and reliable journalism is crucial in this fight. The BBC World Service, renowned for its integrity, requires adequate funding to compete with the disinformation efforts of countries like Russia and China.

Social media platforms must also bear accountability for disseminating disinformation. Their algorithms should be transparent, unbiased, and resistant to manipulation to prevent the spread of false information.

With local elections approaching, the potential for foreign disinformation campaigns to impact the UK is a pressing concern. Safeguarding national security and protecting democracy is paramount.

By prioritizing a unified approach, bolstering media integrity, and holding tech companies accountable, the UK can fortify its defenses against the growing threat of disinformation.
