Police are currently assessing a complaint regarding Reform UK’s initiative to cover the energy bills for an entire street for a year. As part of a prize draw event, Nigel Farage and Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick presented a couple, believed to be Reform UK supporters, in Wigan with flowers and a substantial check amounting to £1,758.
Following the event, social media users alleged that Mr. Farage had prior acquaintance with the couple, referencing a photo from a 2019 Brexit Party gathering. Last month, Reform organized a promotional activity at a petrol station in Derbyshire, reducing fuel prices to highlight a commitment to lower fuel duty.
A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police confirmed receipt of the report and stated that they are currently evaluating the matter. This review does not signify the initiation of an investigation, and the nature of the potential offense under scrutiny remains unclear.
Reform UK asserted that the prize draw had been approved by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Participants were required to disclose personal details such as their name, email, phone number, voting history, and future voting intentions to enter the competition.
The ICO emphasized the importance of political parties adhering to data protection regulations when collecting personal information for campaigning purposes. They engaged with Reform regarding the competition and emphasized the need for enhanced transparency in handling individuals’ personal data.
Mr. Farage expressed no concerns about potential breaches of electoral regulations arising from the event. Party sources stated that numerous members participated in the draw, making it unsurprising that a supporter emerged as the winner, with video evidence documenting the random selection process for legal verification. The draw was reportedly open to both members and non-members.
The Electoral Commission cautioned that certain activities aimed at influencing voter behavior could constitute offenses, including “bribery and treating.” They emphasized that any allegations of misconduct should be reported to the police for further investigation.
A spokesperson for Reform UK affirmed their confidence in the initiative’s compliance with electoral laws.
