An individual identified as Alan Dop has received a sentence for physically assaulting his spouse without provocation during a cruise they took to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. The incident occurred on a luxury Mediterranean cruise in August of the previous year, where Dop kicked his wife, resulting in visible bruising and swelling, as detailed by prosecutor Elen Owen. Additionally, Dop forcefully grabbed and shook his wife, throwing her across the room and causing injury to her back. The victim refrained from seeking help during the cruise due to the confined environment.

The couple’s seven-year-old child witnessed the abusive behavior. It was revealed that Dop and the victim had been in a relationship since 2004 and had been married for a decade, sharing a child together. Over the last two years, Dop’s alcohol consumption had escalated, leading his wife to request him to leave, which he declined. Described as extremely abusive when intoxicated, Dop’s actions were highlighted during court proceedings at Caernarfon Crown Court.

Following the cruise incident, another abusive episode occurred at their residence in Gwynedd. The victim requested Dop to move to another room due to his inebriated state, but he refused and engaged in physical aggression towards her, resulting in bruising on her bicep and neck. The victim managed to escape, contacted the authorities, and Dop was found to be heavily intoxicated upon police arrival.

Despite blaming the victim, Dop expressed remorse for his actions during the sentencing. His defense attorney emphasized his previous charitable work with the RNLI and attributed his behavior to alcohol-related issues. The court acknowledged Dop’s symptoms of PTSD from his past experiences with the RNLI but condemned his blame-shifting tactics. Dop narrowly avoided imprisonment with a 12-month suspended sentence for assault charges.

Judge Simon Mills highlighted Dop’s alcohol dependency and emphasized the need for rehabilitation, warning that Dop was on his final opportunity to address his issues. Additionally, Dop was issued a seven-year restraining order to safeguard the victim and stipulated third-party arrangements for contact with their child.
