A member of Parliament has questioned a TikTok executive regarding a mother’s efforts to uncover the truth behind her teenage son’s mysterious death. Ellen Roome has been pursuing access to her son Julian “Jools” Sweeney’s TikTok account data following his suicide in 2022, suspecting a potential connection to an online challenge. Roome is part of a group of families in the UK who have lost children in similar circumstances and are taking legal action against TikTok.
During a parliamentary session, Liberal Democrat MP Cameron Thomas challenged TikTok’s Giles Derrington on the company’s response to Roome’s requests. Derrington acknowledged the gravity of the situation and mentioned ongoing legal constraints that limit the information he can share. He explained that data protection regulations require the deletion of certain data after a specific period, indicating that TikTok has engaged with Roome on the matter but refrained from confirming the availability of Jools’s data due to the legal proceedings.
