FC Metz young talent, Tahirys Dos Santos, sustained injuries during a tragic fire in Crans-Montana on New Year’s Day, where 47 individuals lost their lives. Dos Santos, aged 19, was reportedly present at Le Constellation Bar in the Swiss ski resort when the fire broke out in the early morning hours.
Following the incident, the reserve player was flown to Germany for treatment of his burns. FC Metz released a statement on their official website expressing their sorrow over the situation. The club conveyed that Dos Santos, a youth player hailing from Mont-Saint-Martin, was severely burned in the Crans-Montana fire on New Year’s Eve and is currently undergoing treatment in Germany.
The club’s management, players, coaches, and staff expressed deep shock and extended heartfelt condolences to Dos Santos. They also pledged full support to his family and are coordinating with medical authorities for Dos Santos’ transfer to Mercy Hospital near his residence.
FC Metz assured to provide updates on Dos Santos’ condition and requested privacy for Dos Santos and his family during this challenging time. The fire in Crans-Montana claimed the lives of at least 47 people and was suspected to have been started by sparklers placed in champagne bottles.
Witnesses described a swift escalation of the fire at the bar, with individuals, mainly young adults, sustaining injuries in addition to the fatalities. The blaze triggered the release of combustible gases, leading to violent ignition, a phenomenon referred to as “embrasement generalise” by officials.
Victims suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation, with many requiring specialized care in hospitals across Switzerland. Authorities urged caution to prevent further accidents that could strain the already overwhelmed healthcare system.
King Charles III expressed deep sadness over the tragedy in a message to the Swiss President, emphasizing sympathy for the affected individuals and admiration for the emergency services.
