An upcoming charge of ‘reckless driving’ is expected to be filed against Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria by the police following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates. According to a report from The Daily Mail, the driver, a 47-year-old member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, is set to face charges within the next 48 hours.

The driver was discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve and was subsequently transferred to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the fatal crash occurred on Monday.

After being questioned for several hours, the driver provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the accident, which claimed the lives of Joshua’s friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele.

Following his release from the hospital, Joshua, along with his mother, paid their respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before their repatriation to the UK.

A police source informed the Mail that the driver, currently in stable condition, was taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation after receiving treatment for minor injuries. The source mentioned a potential court appearance for the driver on charges of reckless driving, pending further proceedings despite potential delays due to a bank holiday.

The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck fled the scene and has been declared wanted by the police. Eddie Hearn, chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, expressed his condolences for Ghami and Ayodele’s passing on Instagram.
