Russian military forces conducted a significant drone strike across Ukraine overnight, coinciding with a rise in casualties following a shooting spree in Kyiv that resulted in seven deaths. In response, Ukraine targeted the Black Sea port of Tuapse, causing a major fire at an oil facility in the Krasnodar region. This marked the second assault on the Russian site within a week, with the aim of disrupting President Vladimir Putin’s finances heavily reliant on energy revenues.
The shooting incident in Kyiv’s mall over the weekend left six dead and 14 injured, including a child. The seventh victim succumbed to injuries today, with the attack classified as an act of terrorism. The perpetrator, a 58-year-old Russian native residing in Donetsk, was neutralized by rapid response special forces.
Russian troops launched attacks on various Ukrainian cities, resulting in property damage and civilian injuries, with air raid sirens sounding in numerous locations. The assault involved 142 drones targeting regions like Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, and Poltava. Notably, President Zelensky’s hometown, Kryvyi Rih, also faced an attack, prompting Ukrainian air defenses to mobilize against the invasion.
Although Ukrainian forces managed to down 113 Russian drones, the wreckage caused collateral damage. The targeted Tuapse refinery handles up to 12 million tons of crude oil annually, ranking among Russia’s top ten refineries. In recent months, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly struck key Russian export hubs, impacting significant oil terminals like Ust-Luga, Primorsk, and Novorossiysk.
President Zelensky criticized the US decision to extend Russia’s oil sales window despite ongoing sanctions, emphasizing that such transactions fund the conflict in Ukraine. The US rationale for the waiver was to address energy supply concerns amid geopolitical tensions. However, Zelensky underscored that every dollar spent on Russian oil fuels the war in Ukraine, where extensive sanctions have targeted Russia since the invasion.
Ukraine’s strategic strikes on Russian energy facilities aim to diminish Putin’s war chest, while Kremlin forces retaliate by targeting civilian areas to undermine morale. With Russia facing challenges in recruiting troops for the conflict, Putin’s military reportedly suffers significant daily losses, highlighting the intensifying dynamics of the ongoing confrontation.
