A father and son duo, George, 57, and Josh Kohler, 23, hailing from Norfolk, embarked on a 400-day cycling journey across more than 25 countries, encountering diverse landscapes ranging from deserts to mountains and rice fields. Their expedition, named ‘Pedal the Planet’, commenced on March 29 last year and has seen them cover nearly 30,000 kilometers, raising over £30,000 for charity. The Kohlers are on the verge of setting three Guinness World Records: ‘Fastest father and son to circumnavigate the world on bicycles’, ‘Furthest distance cycled by a father and son’, and ‘Most countries cycled through by a father and son’.
Their global cycling adventure has been laden with challenges such as battling harsh weather conditions, rugged terrains, and isolated routes. Among the countries they traversed, China left an indelible mark on the duo. Josh, a videographer, expressed their admiration for the country’s unique culture, food, and friendly locals. They reminisced about walking on the Great Wall and beholding the vast Hani rice terraces.
While Brazil presented formidable hurdles due to its steep terrain, South America, in general, lacked cycling infrastructure, making their journey more demanding. Similarly, Australia’s vastness posed challenges as they crossed lengthy stretches of barren desert. As their journey nears its conclusion, the Kohlers are now pedaling through Portugal, Spain, and France, aiming to return to Norfolk by May 2. Despite the physical and emotional toll, they reflect on the profound impact of the expedition on their relationship and personal growth.
Throughout their expedition, the Kohlers have raised funds for UNICEF and Bicycle Links, supporting underprivileged individuals with refurbished bikes and mental health services. To follow their journey or contribute to their cause, visit their social media accounts or their JustGiving page.
