Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has emphasized that the general public can discern Donald Trump’s repeated criticisms of Keir Starmer while defending the strength of the special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Lammy highlighted that President Trump’s recent attacks on the British Prime Minister were aimed at applying pressure regarding the Iran conflict but asserted that these actions did not weaken the longstanding ties between the two nations. Despite Trump’s negative remarks and threats to revoke the US-UK trade deal, Lammy, a former Foreign Secretary, dismissed the notion that the relationship was severely strained.

During a conversation with the Mirror while touring the Gulf region, Lammy reiterated the substantial foundation of the special relationship, citing the extensive military cooperation, intelligence sharing, economic investments, and strong interpersonal connections between the two countries.

Regarding Trump’s critical stance towards the UK, Lammy noted that the British populace could discern the President’s rhetoric and recognize his attempts to influence the Prime Minister’s decisions. Lammy affirmed that the UK’s stance on the Iran conflict remained unchanged, emphasizing that the conflict was not Britain’s to engage in.

Lammy mentioned his positive rapport with US Vice President JD Vance, with whom he had established an unexpected friendship. Their recent meeting at the White House focused on discussions in Islamabad and the upcoming virtual summit planned by the Prime Minister.

In addition to Middle Eastern affairs, Lammy and Vance exchanged views on Ukraine and the broader impact of the Iran conflict on the European war, particularly in light of Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Lammy stressed the need to maintain pressure on Russia amid the escalating tensions.

During his visits to Oman and Kuwait, Lammy engaged with allies affected by Iran’s retaliatory actions and met with military personnel, including members of the UK’s Royal Air Force Regiment involved in safeguarding against drone threats with the Rapid Sentry system.

Meanwhile, Keir Starmer is set to co-host a summit in France with global leaders to discuss plans for reopening the Strait of Hormuz once the Iran conflict is resolved. The Prime Minister is expected to address the summit attendees on the global responsibility to promptly restore the flow of energy and trade through the strait.
