Glenn Byrne displayed high spirits, engaging in conversations and laughter after being hospitalized post his knockout defeat to William Crolla on Friday night. This marked Byrne’s first professional loss as Crolla, the younger brother of former WBA lightweight champion Anthony, ended the fight in the seventh round at Planet Ice, Altrincham.
Despite Byrne knocking down Crolla multiple times, spectators felt the match should have been stopped earlier. Referee Ron Kearney allowed the fight to continue, leading to Crolla securing a brutal KO in the seventh round, bringing his professional record to 10-1, while Byrne’s now stands at 7-1-1.
Following the bout, Byrne received medical attention in the ring before being transported to the hospital. Managed by his brother Jay Byrne, Glenn, aged 29, remained in good spirits awaiting the results of a CT scan, as shared by JB Promotions on Instagram.
Promoter Eddie Hearn acknowledged the significance of the match, noting that Crolla’s career could have been jeopardized with a loss. He praised Crolla’s resilience and expressed hope for Byrne’s well-being, emphasizing the intense battle between the two fighters.
Crolla extended his sympathies to Byrne, expressing regret for celebrating the victory and acknowledging Byrne’s bravery in the ring. He called for a round of applause for Byrne’s warrior spirit during the fight.
