A 16-year-old teenager is facing serious charges after allegedly stabbing a 13-year-old girl 93 times in what he claimed was an act of self-defense. The incident, which resulted in the death of Savannah Copeland, occurred when Malakiah Harris was just 15 years old. Harris is accused of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the tragic incident that took place on a walking trail in Powell near Knoxville, Tennessee.
According to court documents, Savannah had sneaked out of her home to meet Harris and his brother in the early hours of the morning. Harris alleged that the victim had attacked him, leading to the fatal stabbing. The young girl was reportedly stabbed multiple times on her upper body as she tried to flee the scene. Harris and his brother then left her body on the ground and returned home.
The suspect later admitted to his brother that the killing was an act of self-defense. He also reportedly told his girlfriend about the incident without revealing the victim’s identity. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, as stated by the police. Savannah’s father expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and the lack of a clear motive for the brutal crime.
Following a ruling earlier this year, Harris will be tried as an adult for the murder. Juvenile Court Judge Tim Irwin cited premeditation and probable cause as factors in his decision to try the teenager as an adult. The case has raised concerns about the need to instill compassion and better values in children to prevent such senseless acts of violence in the future.
