A tragic incident unfolded as a young girl perished due to neglect in what authorities described as a nightmarish setting created by her father. Robert Buskey Jr., aged 35, admitted guilt to second-degree murder and supplying controlled substances to a child, leading to a sentence of 27 years to life.
Law enforcement responded to Buskey’s residence on April 14, 2024, discovering the lifeless body of his daughter Charlotte, severely malnourished and confined in a bedroom. Shockingly, a crude enclosure housed Buskey’s three-year-old son in the dining area of the squalid home.
The Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office revealed that Charlotte and her brother had endured prolonged neglect and malnutrition, isolated from society without family contact, medical care, or schooling. Their existence revolved solely around Buskey’s abominable household, with Charlotte ultimately confined to her room while Buskey indulged in drugs and video games, neglecting his responsibilities as a parent.
Buskey’s heinous actions extended to securing Charlotte’s room with a lock, later reinforced with tape to prevent her escape attempts. Deprived of basic necessities, Charlotte languished in a cramped ‘pack n play’ with minimal space to move, leading to her tragic demise.
Upon discovery, Charlotte exhibited severe dehydration and starvation, evident from her sunken eyes and emaciated state. Buskey faced additional charges related to drug distribution after his children tested positive for cocaine, emphasizing the gravity of his neglect and abuse.
During his sentencing, Buskey expressed remorse and acknowledged his culpability, recognizing the severity of his actions and the public perception of him. District Attorney Robert M. Carney highlighted the distressing pattern of child deaths in the community, underscoring the callousness exhibited by individuals entrusted with their care.
