London’s fashion scene is buzzing as the city’s latest fashion week kicks off, drawing praise from a renowned designer for its innovative take on African fashion. The event showcased cutting-edge African-inspired designs by emerging talents, accompanied by an electrifying Afrobeat soundtrack on the runway. Luxury designer Veekee James, a Forbes Under 30 honoree, graced the event at The InterContinental London, Greenwich over the weekend.
Veekee expressed her delight at the growing global recognition of African fashion, emphasizing the continent’s significant contribution to the industry. The event, organized by RAFT X, featured a diverse lineup including a runway show, a talent competition with a cash prize, and networking opportunities with businesses like British-Nigerian food company Puff Puff Ministry.
RAFT X, a newly established annual affair celebrating arts and culture, received high praise from talent show judge DJ Abass for its role in promoting African talent on a global scale. The winner of the talent show, spoken-word artist Jessica Edgar, known as Poetess Jess, was overwhelmed by her victory and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase her talent among other Black creatives.
Radio presenter Lady T, one of the talent show judges, commended the event for its multicultural essence and the increasing influence of African culture on the global fashion landscape. Harvesters UK, the organizer of RAFT X, aims to continue providing platforms for diverse talents and fostering community engagement through impactful events.
Looking ahead, RAFT X organizer Dayo Ogunrombi envisions a larger-scale event next year, attracting more brands and sponsors to further elevate African talent and creativity on an international platform.
