Our Yorkshire Farm’s Amanda Owen and her daughters faced a tragic scene in a chilling episode last Saturday. The family, enduring one of the harshest springs yet, was concerned for the vulnerable newborn lambs on their farm.
During a routine checkup in the fields, Amanda, joined by her young daughters Annas, Clementine, and Nancy, encountered a sorrowful sight – a dead lamb neglected by its mother.
Struck by the grim reality of farming life, Amanda expressed her dismay, “Oh no,” a sentiment echoed by one of her girls upon the discovery.
Delving into the harsh truths of nature to her children, Amanda conveyed both the unsolved mysteries and stark realities of caring for livestock.
Sharing in the somber mood, Clemmie noted the sadness of the situation, prompting Amanda to explain how an unfortunate accident led to the young lamb’s demise.
“It could be good if it was still alive,” Clemmie said, as her mum replied, “Of course, it would be much better if it was still alive,” reports Leeds Live.
“Everything has to die,” the youngster reflected. “Even people.”
“You’re right,” Amanda agreed. “It is just such a shame because it didn’t have much of a life, did it?”
Speaking directly to the camera, she explained: “They have to have a good understanding of life and death. You can’t cloak that one away. You can’t sideline that one. You can’t dwell on it.
“They know that in that few moments when a lamb is born, that is a critical moment, and if they can help that process along, then good. They also get to see when that process doesn’t happen.”
The Owen family, who are no strangers to the realities of farm life at Ravenseat Farm, have experienced their share of loss. In a poignant episode of their Channel 5 series, Amanda recounted the sorrowful event of losing a puppy.
During a walk with her sheepdog Kate, Amanda revealed the heartbreaking news to viewers.
She said: “Clive went to let her out at dinner time, and her puppy was there stillborn. I’ve got to say, she seems absolutely fine. There’s never been any change in her mood, she’s never been off her food, so she was never even ill.”
