Health authorities have issued a warning about a significant increase in severe cases of a highly contagious virus. The UK Health Security Agency reported a 47% rise in norovirus infections in the first two weeks of 2026 compared to the previous monitoring period.

Officials have emphasized the importance of proper hygiene practices to prevent the spread of the virus, especially among individuals aged 65 and above. While the situation is currently within expected levels, there is a growing number of outbreaks in healthcare settings.

Experts highlighted the unpredictable nature of pathogens like influenza and norovirus, emphasizing the need for the public to adopt preventive measures such as frequent handwashing. It is essential to use soap and warm water for hand cleansing as alcohol-based sanitizers are ineffective against norovirus. Additionally, using bleach-based products for surface disinfection can help prevent infections from spreading.

According to Amy Douglas, Lead Epidemiologist at UKHSA, it is crucial for people to take simple steps to reduce the spread of norovirus and avoid further escalation. Individuals experiencing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea should refrain from returning to work, school, or preparing food for others until at least 48 hours after symptoms have ceased.

The NHS advises that those with norovirus symptoms should stay home until they have been symptom-free for two days to prevent transmission to others. The same rule applies to avoiding hospitals and care homes during this time.

While flu, COVID-19, and RSV levels have decreased in the early weeks of the year, it is important for the public to continue practicing preventive measures to sustain this downward trend. Ensuring well-ventilated indoor spaces can help reduce the spread of respiratory infections like flu, and symptomatic individuals should stay home if possible.

Vaccination remains a crucial defense against severe illness, especially for high-risk individuals. The flu vaccine has shown effectiveness against prevalent strains this year, underscoring the importance of eligible individuals getting vaccinated to stay protected throughout the flu season.

Dr. Alex Allen, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, emphasized the need for continued vigilance despite the current decline in flu and RSV cases. Vaccination appointments are available through the NHS booking system, and those at higher risk who have not been vaccinated yet are encouraged to do so promptly.

Overall, maintaining preventive measures and staying up to date with vaccinations are key strategies to combat the spread of respiratory infections and protect public health.
