Keir Starmer has cautioned Donald Trump that the UK will not succumb to his threats of imposing tariffs due to opposition to his Greenland plans. During the PMQs session, Starmer expressed his disapproval of pressuring NATO allies who oppose the acquisition of Greenland, emphasizing that such tactics are unjust. He declared that Britain will firmly uphold its principles and values regarding the future of Greenland, regardless of tariff threats.
In a notable rebuke of the US President, Starmer also criticized Trump for his inconsistent statements regarding the Chagos Islands deal, accusing him of altering his stance to exert pressure on the UK and challenge its values and principles concerning Greenland.
Trump recently issued a warning to impose 10% tariffs on Britain and other European allies starting February 1 if they do not agree to his Greenland purchase. He further threatened to raise the tariffs to 25% by June on NATO allies who resist his intentions.
Additionally, Trump made an unexpected shift in his position on the Chagos Islands deal, previously supported, connecting it with the Greenland issue. He criticized the UK for planning to transfer the vital US military base on Diego Garcia to Mauritius, labeling the decision as “an act of GREAT STUPIDITY.”
During parliamentary proceedings, Starmer reiterated his firm stance against Trump’s pressure tactics, highlighting the President’s deliberate attempts to influence the UK’s position on Greenland. He affirmed his refusal to yield to such pressure, expressing surprise at the Opposition leader’s alignment with Trump’s objectives.
In response to accusations of weakness from Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, Starmer emphasized his commitment to working with NATO allies to safeguard national security and maintain unity within the alliance. He criticized Badenoch for her lack of solidarity and inconsistent positions on Greenland, contrasting her actions with the importance of upholding national interests.
