Minneapolis experienced additional unrest as a result of an incident where an ICE agent shot a person, following the recent tragic killing of Renee Good. The federal officer shot a man in the leg during a car chase to apprehend an individual described by Homeland Security as an “illegal alien from Venezuela.” According to the US Government, the man they were pursuing crashed into a vehicle and attempted to flee on foot before the shooting occurred.
Two individuals from a nearby apartment came to assist the man, leading to a confrontation where the DHS claimed their officer was ambushed and attacked. Subsequently, the agent drew his gun and shot one of the individuals in the leg. The City of Minneapolis confirmed that the injured man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the ICE agent also received medical treatment for his injuries.
Minneapolis Police chief Brian O’Hara stated that the FBI was investigating the incident, with Mayor Jacob Frey criticizing the immigration office for causing turmoil in Minnesota. Local residents protested against ICE and its actions, particularly following the recent controversial killing of Renee Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross.
Protests erupted after the shooting incident, as the Trump administration faced backlash for labeling the deceased woman a “domestic terrorist.” The deployment of approximately 3,000 ICE officers to Minneapolis in recent weeks further fueled tensions. Federal agents used tear gas on protesters, leading to chaotic scenes in the city.
Demonstrators in Minneapolis displayed anti-ICE posters as they took to the streets in response to the shooting by the ICE agent. Confrontations between federal agents, police, and protesters escalated during the protests, reflecting the heightened emotions in the community following a series of tragic events.
