Woman dies at hotel in busy UK city centre as man arrested over ‘unexplained’ death

Published:

Detectives investigating the death of a woman at a hotel in Liverpool city centre have arrested a man on suspicion of murder. The “unexplained” death occurred at the Lord Nelson Hotel on Hotham Street in the Merseyside city.

Emergency services attended the scene with a significant police presence. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. There were multiple police cars and vans parked on Lord Nelson Street and Holtham Street. CSI officers clad in white suits could be seen going in an out of the hotel behind a police cordon.

A woman told the ECHO that residents on the top floor of the three-storey building had been told to stay inside. Another man, who lived on the second floor, said he had been told he was not allowed to go back into his room, and had no idea when he would be able to get back inside.

Merseyside Police said in a statement: “At around 1.40pm yesterday (Friday 11 April), we received a report that a 58-year-old woman had been found unconscious inside the Lord Nelson Hotel on Hotham Street.

“Emergency services attended the scene, but she was sadly pronounced deceased. An investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and the cause of her death.

“As part of enquiries, a 52-year-old man from Liverpool has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The man was taken to a police station and will be questioned by detectives.”

Detective Superintendent Paul Grounds said: “These are still the early stages of our investigation and our work will continue at pace at the location and elsewhere, as we look to piece together what happened. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family, who will be supported by specialist officers, and to everyone affected by the events of yesterday. “A man is in custody, and I would like to take this opportunity to remind people of the importance of not posting speculation or other comments online which could affect our ongoing work.”
