A widespread layer of snow enveloped the UK today, delighting many with picturesque winter landscapes on the second day of the year.
Overnight temperatures plummeted to extreme lows following New Year’s celebrations, dropping below zero across the nation. Consequently, precipitation transformed into snow and ice, particularly affecting northern England and Scotland, where a substantial snow cover up to 10cm deep was reported in some areas.
This cold spell coincided with the Met Office’s warning of anticipated widespread snow and ice, with alerts extending into the upcoming week.

Reports indicate that Loch Glascarnoch in the Scottish Highlands received over 8cm (3.14 inches) of snow on Thursday, while Aboyne, in Aberdeenshire, saw 9cm (3.54 inches) of snowfall. Snowfall was also observed in Warwickshire, England, showcasing vast white landscapes in the north, as well as in Llanrwst, Wales.
The Met Office projects that snowfall will intensify, potentially accumulating between 10 to 20cm in low-lying areas and up to 30 to 40cm in elevated regions, with conditions possibly leading to drifting snow and blizzard-like scenarios.
Rebekah Hicks, the Met Office’s lead meteorologist, emphasized that the UK is experiencing “arctic air and brisk northerly winds,” resulting in the wintry conditions.
Hicks stated: “The UK is currently gripped by arctic air and brisk northerly winds as we enter the new year. Snow and ice alerts remain active for numerous regions, with the potential for heavy snow showers, particularly in northern Scotland and high-altitude areas elsewhere, while many inland locations are expected to remain predominantly sunny and clear.
“The bitterly cold conditions will persist through the weekend and into the following week, with daytime temperatures struggling to rise above freezing for some, and overnight lows dropping to minus double digits in certain areas. We advise the public to stay #WeatherAware, stay informed with the forecasts, and plan ahead as icy roads and slippery surfaces are probable.”
