Fears of potential violence have arisen following widespread unrest in a town in the UK, prompting urgent action by law enforcement authorities. Over the past few days, more than 100 young individuals have been engaged in disruptive behavior in the town center of Oldham, involving fights and the reckless use of fireworks. To address the escalating situation, Greater Manchester Police have swiftly implemented a Section 35 dispersal order and Section 60 stop and search powers.

The Section 35 order empowers officers to exclude individuals from the area for up to 48 hours through written notices, while the Section 60 provision grants extended authority to conduct stop and search operations on individuals within the vicinity for a period of 24 hours. These measures were put into effect from 1.25 pm on Tuesday to maintain public safety and prevent further disturbances.

A significant altercation erupted when a group of men congregated in Oldham around 5 pm on Thursday, leading to ensuing chaos as the situation intensified. To date, law enforcement has made five arrests, including two for violent disorder and three for possessing offensive weapons. A statement from the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) highlighted that neighborhood officers will remain highly visible in the area and utilize these powers as needed to safeguard the community.

Inspector Amie Whitehead, Neighbourhood Inspector for Oldham South & West, emphasized the necessity of these measures in averting additional disorder and ensuring the well-being of residents, workers, and visitors in Oldham Town Centre. The statement reiterated a firm stance against antisocial behavior and a commitment to taking decisive action against those involved. Inspector Whitehead urged individuals with concerns or information to approach the officers present for assistance.
