Individuals are being encouraged to receive their flu vaccination within the next 48 hours to ensure a flu-free holiday season and alleviate strain on the healthcare system.

NHS trusts nationwide are issuing urgent appeals as flu instances reach unprecedented levels. A new variant of the seasonal influenza A virus, H3N2 “subclade K”, is driving an unusually early flu outbreak, leading to a surge in hospital admissions due to reduced immunity levels among the population. Recent NHS data reveals an average of 1,717 hospital beds being occupied by flu patients, including 69 in critical care. This marks a 56% increase compared to the same period in 2024 and a tenfold rise from 2023.

Given that it takes up to 14 days for the vaccine to take full effect, receiving the jab by Thursday, December 11, could be pivotal in reducing the number of individuals severely affected during the Christmas season. The UK Health Security Agency emphasizes vaccination as the primary measure to prevent contracting and transmitting flu and other respiratory illnesses this winter.

In London, flu-related hospitalizations have tripled compared to the same timeframe last year, with an average of 259 patients occupying hospital beds daily since November 24. The NHS in London is urging eligible residents to promptly get vaccinated to shield themselves from the virus and alleviate pressure on healthcare staff this winter. The health service emphasized the urgency of taking action with only a few weeks remaining before Christmas.

Dr. Chris Streather, the Chief Medical Director for the NHS in London, stated, “Despite preparing earlier than ever for winter, surging flu cases coinciding with resident doctors’ industrial action will strain services in the upcoming weeks. While over 1.8 million individuals have been vaccinated this season, there are still vulnerable groups who have not received the vaccine. If you are eligible and have not been vaccinated yet, I urge you to do so promptly – it’s never too late.”

Elsewhere, the University Hospitals of North Midlands Trust cautioned the public on Monday to utilize A&E services solely for serious or life-threatening emergencies. Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital have declared a “critical incident” following a week of intense pressure and heightened demand over the weekend.

Royal Stoke’s Chief Operating Officer, Katy Thorpe, remarked, “We have decided to declare a critical incident to implement additional measures to ensure safe services for our patients and those awaiting ambulances in the community. We request that patients’ acquaintances or family members promptly pick them up upon discharge and have necessary items ready at home. I extend my gratitude to our dedicated staff during this exceptionally challenging period and to the public for their understanding and cooperation.”

Subsequently, the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, overseeing Queen Elizabeth, Heathlands, Good Hope, and Solihull hospitals, also declared a “critical incident” due to extreme pressures.

The spike in infections prompted Downing Street to reiterate that vaccination remains the “most effective defense against flu”. A spokesperson from No 10 stated, “There are established guidelines for individuals to consider various measures to contain the spread of winter illnesses if experiencing flu-like symptoms. This is not a new directive but a suggestion for limiting the transmission of winter respiratory illnesses. Vaccination remains the best defense against flu, which is why we are intensifying vaccination efforts this winter, with nearly 17 million flu vaccinations already administered, an increase of 350,000 from last year.”
