A video circulating on social media captures the apparent start of the fire at a bar in Switzerland. The footage shows flames engulfing the ceiling near partygoers at a New Year’s Eve event, with music still blaring from the speakers. Although the video’s authenticity has not been verified yet.

Swiss authorities have reported that “several tens of people” are believed to have perished, and approximately 100 individuals have been injured, most of them severely, in a fire that broke out around 1:30 am local time on Thursday at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, located 25 miles north of the Matterhorn.

The exact number of casualties remains uncertain as investigations are ongoing at the site to identify the victims and notify their families. While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, officials have ruled out any suspicion of an intentional attack. Access to the building for experts has not been granted yet.

Described as an “embrasement generalise,” a term used in firefighting to indicate a blaze triggering the release of combustible gases that can lead to violent ignition, the incident witnessed people breaking windows to escape, some sustaining serious injuries. Witnesses recounted the chaotic scene of individuals attempting to flee the smoke and flames, likening it to a horror movie.

Emergency services, including helicopters and ambulances, swiftly responded to aid the victims, including individuals from various nations. The high number of injured individuals has overwhelmed the local hospital’s intensive care unit and operating theater, prompting authorities to caution against accidents that could strain the already stretched medical resources in the region.

Addressing the media, Mathias Renard, head of the regional government, expressed sorrow over the tragic turn of events, labeling what should have been a celebratory evening as a “nightmare.” Similarly, Valais Cantonal police commander Frederic Gisler conveyed deep devastation over the incident.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin shared condolences for the victims, the injured, and their families on social media. As it was his first day in office, he postponed his traditional New Year address out of respect for the victims’ families. Meanwhile, a reception center and helpline have been established to support those affected by the tragedy.
