A mistake occurred at a hospital mortuary leading to the inadvertent cremation of a body due to a mix-up caused by human error. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) has initiated a thorough investigation and suspended the staff members involved. The incident took place at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in the city. Family members have been informed about the error.

Following the wrongful release of the body to undertakers, an apology was issued by NHS officials. The mistake was discovered only after the cremation had already occurred. Unfortunately, the error resulted in the cremation of the wrong body during a service planned by a family to commemorate their loved one.

NHSGGC, Scotland’s largest health board, acknowledged the distress caused to two families due to the incident. The incident, attributed to human error, involved the improper release of the body from the hospital’s mortuary in Glasgow.

Affected families were promptly notified about the situation and offered full support. An insider expressed shock over the incident and emphasized the urgent need for accountability and change within the hospital.

Scottish Conservative shadow public health minister Brian Whittle criticized the oversight, highlighting the importance of following proper procedures to prevent such devastating outcomes. Dr. Scott Davidson, medical director at NHSGGC, extended sincere apologies to the families involved, admitting a failure to adhere to the hospital’s stringent body identification and labeling processes.

The Scottish Government, through a spokesperson, extended condolences to the affected families and emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
