A tragic incident occurred at a Leicestershire station where an individual lost their life after being struck by a train on the tracks. British Transport Police (BTP) officers swiftly responded to Sileby Railway Station this morning following reports of a casualty on the railway. Despite the efforts of paramedics, the unidentified person was declared deceased at the scene, as confirmed by BTP.
The BTP spokesperson stated that the incident is not under suspicion, and preparations are being made to compile a report for the coroner. Subsequently, passengers experienced disruptions as railway lines between Loughborough and Leicester were temporarily shut down to facilitate emergency services.
The disruption impacted train services on various routes including London St Pancras/Nottingham/Sheffield and Leicester/Nottingham/Lincoln/Grimsby. Trains operating between Derby/Nottingham and Leicester were either canceled or delayed significantly, with delays of up to 60 minutes reported by Leicestershire Live.
While the line has since reopened between Loughborough and Leicester, East Midlands Railway cautioned passengers to expect delays and changes to services as they strive to restore normal operations. This unfortunate incident follows a similar tragedy last week in Nottinghamshire where a 14-year-old boy lost his life after being hit by a train in Burton Joyce. Authorities and medical personnel responded to the scene on Wednesday evening, with the teenager being pronounced dead on-site.
According to a BTP spokesperson, the incident in Burton Joyce was also not deemed suspicious, and arrangements are being made for the coroner’s review.
