Flu cases are on the rise in England due to a new strain causing outbreaks, particularly among children. The H3N2 strain, which had a severe impact in Australia, is now expected to have a similar effect in the UK as winter approaches. Recent data from the NHS laboratories indicated an increase in the flu positivity rate to 11.6%, up from 10.7% the previous week.

According to UKHSA data, the weekly hospital admission rate for flu has risen to 4.56 per 100,000 individuals, compared to 3.39 in the preceding week. While infections have not yet reached their seasonal peak, they are significantly higher than usual for this time of year.

The new strain is causing more severe illness, even in healthy individuals, with a higher rate of intensive care admissions. Symptoms of the H3N2 strain are similar to other flu strains but may lead to more severe complications such as sepsis. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has issued a warning about the potential deadly consequences of this strain.

UKHSA estimates reveal a significant increase in flu-related deaths in England compared to previous years, highlighting the importance of vaccination. The effectiveness of this season’s flu vaccine in preventing hospital admissions is notable, particularly for children.

Aside from flu, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infections have also surged, emphasizing the need for vaccination and proper hygiene practices. Dr. Conall Watson from UKHSA urges eligible individuals to get vaccinated against flu and RSV to protect against severe illness, especially with the upcoming holiday season.

Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, and fatigue. The H3N2 strain tends to cause more severe fever compared to other strains.

Preventative measures such as vaccination, good hygiene practices, and avoiding crowded places can help reduce the risk of flu infection. Flu vaccines are recommended for specific groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, and healthcare workers.

Parents are advised to ensure their children receive the flu vaccine, while Covid-19 vaccinations are also available for eligible individuals. Appointments for flu vaccines can be booked through various channels, including local pharmacies, GP practices, online, or by calling 119.
