A man responsible for throwing a six-year-old boy from a balcony at Tate Modern has been convicted of assaulting two nurses. Jonty Bravery, aged 24, kicked one nurse in the thigh and scratched at another’s face at Broadmoor hospital in Berkshire, where he is detained. The nurse with facial injuries was left with blood running down her cheek after the attack.
Bravery, who received a life sentence in 2020 for the balcony incident, did not appear in court for his recent trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The prosecutors detailed how Bravery, under constant observation, tried to harm himself by climbing up a ledge after using the bathroom. The nurses intervened to prevent any self-harm, leading to the assault on them.
During the struggle captured on body-worn footage, staff members rushed to assist as Bravery resisted. The nurses recounted the chaotic scene, with Bravery attempting to climb onto a windowsill while they tried to calm him down to avoid any harm. Both nurses sustained injuries, with one needing hospital treatment for facial scratches.
The Chief Magistrate found Bravery guilty of the assaults and postponed sentencing to January 8 to assess his current mental health status. This incident follows a previous conviction in 2020 when Bravery attacked other hospital staff, resulting in a 14-week jail term for assaulting a nursing assistant and a rehabilitation therapist assistant.
