The UK has greenlit the establishment of the first Universal Studios theme park, with plans approved by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The theme park will be located in Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire, and is set to bypass standard local planning procedures through a Special Development Order (SDO) effective from January 12. The local MP expressed great excitement about this milestone development.
Once operational, the theme park, situated on a former brickworks site, is anticipated to create job opportunities for approximately 8,000 individuals, alongside 20,000 construction roles. The project is projected to inject £50 billion into the UK economy and will benefit from proximity to Luton Airport for transport connections, as reported by Cambridgeshire Live.
Universal Studios emphasized the significance of this progress in a recent statement, highlighting a forthcoming parliamentary review stage post planning permission. The company pledged to update on advancements, job openings, and collaboration opportunities with local businesses and suppliers.
With promises of unique attractions, including potentially the tallest rides in Europe reaching heights up to 115m, Universal aims to deliver an unparalleled experience in the UK. The park’s entrance plaza will offer dining and shopping options akin to Universal Orlando’s “CityWalk”, accessible to non-ticket holders. Inside, paying guests can anticipate thrilling coasters, captivating spectacles, and encounters with iconic characters, promising immersive storytelling experiences.
Incorporating cutting-edge technology, the rides at the UK park will transport visitors into various themed lands for a fully engrossing adventure. While Universal parks globally feature areas inspired by franchises such as Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, the Simpsons, and Nintendo, the specific inclusions at the UK park remain unconfirmed.
Although an official opening date is pending confirmation, Universal eyes a potential launch by 2031 following the approval of planning permissions.
