“Firefighters Battle Underground Tunnel Blaze in Central London”

A fire incident in Holborn, central London, has prompted a response from approximately 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines. The fire broke out in an underground utilities tunnel on Theobalds Road, according to the London Fire Brigade. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, leading to diversions for eight London bus routes: 1, 19, 38, 55, 59, 68, 133, and SL6. UK Power Networks confirmed that the fire disrupted power supplies to 298 customers in the Southampton Row area of Holborn. Most customers had their power restored by 11.37am, except for ten properties on Southampton Row.

Traffic disruptions persist in the vicinity, with road closures on Southampton Row between A40 High Holborn and Vernon Place, as well as the closure of Theobalds Road where the fire originated. London Fire Brigade reported that the fire in Holborn is now under control, but crews are still present at the scene. The Fire Investigation team will commence its inquiry into the cause of the fire. Motorists are advised to avoid the area to minimize congestion.

LFB Station Commander Paul Morgan stated that firefighters are managing a fire affecting electrical cables in an underground tunnel, indicating that this incident may require an extended response. Due to safety concerns, several road closures and bus route diversions are in effect. London Fire Brigade received 18 calls regarding the fire and dispatched crews from various fire stations, including Soho, Euston, Shoreditch, Islington, and Lambeth.
