Keir Starmer emphasized that the UK will never give up its flag to those who exploit it for spreading violence, fear, and division. The Prime Minister highlighted that the flag symbolizes the diversity of the country, and he will not accept any form of intimidation based on people’s backgrounds or skin color.
These statements follow a large nationalist gathering organized by far-right figure Tommy Robinson, which drew between 110,000 and 150,000 participants, one of the largest in decades. Tech mogul Elon Musk faced backlash for incendiary remarks at the London event, warning of impending violence and urging people to either fight back or perish.
In response, Starmer underscored the right to peaceful protest while firmly opposing assaults on law enforcement and any intimidation based on identity or race. He reiterated that Britain stands for tolerance, diversity, and respect, emphasizing that the flag represents the nation’s diversity and rejecting its misuse for violence and division.
The Metropolitan Police reported 24 arrests and 26 injured officers, with four seriously harmed during the London demonstration. Offenses leading to arrests included affray, violent disorder, assault, and criminal damage.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle criticized Musk’s remarks, labeling them as inappropriate and incomprehensible. He praised the majority of over 100,000 peaceful protesters who exercised freedom of speech and association, condemning the minority who engaged in violent actions against the police.
Kyle highlighted the importance of addressing societal grievances and disparities, emphasizing the need to bridge communities and tackle concerns like immigration. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey condemned Musk’s call for violence, urging cross-party condemnation of such dangerous rhetoric as an attack on democracy.
