A top brain scientist has claimed she can get a hit from coffee – without even taking a sip of the cherished morning drink. Leading neurologist Dr Faye Begeti – dubbed “The Brain Doctor” – said just thinking about the first brew of the day could be enough to trigger the release of a feel-good hormone into our system.
Dr Begeti also said the simple sound and smell of a cup of coffee can launch a rush of dopamine – with 60% of caffeine lovers finding ‘comfort’ in the morning ritual. The Brain Doctor even said just the anticipation of a morning cup has been shown to activate the bodies dopaminergic reward system, leaving people feeling happy even before the first sip.
The finding comes as research revealed that more than half (57%) of Brits said they felt much more productive once they’ve had their morning brew, and 58% find comfort in the common ritual. Although the UK is a nation of tea lovers, coffee has become a crucial part of most peoples days.
Dr Begeti explained why the humble cup of coffee can be crucial for some people in the morning, saying: “Caffeine is a psychoactive stimulant and blocks adenosine receptors in the brain – reducing tiredness, boosting alertness and mood by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine activity.
“The anticipation of your morning coffee activates the dopaminergic reward system – the same brain circuitry involved in motivation and habit. The sound, smell and anticipation can trigger dopamine release, giving you a mood lift even before the caffeine kicks in.”
The neurologist explained how people who don’t like or drink coffee can still get that rush. She said: “Low-caffeine options like decaf and green tea still work. They offer gentle stimulation but still stimulate mild alertness and comfort via the ritualistic cues and sensory experience.
“If I need an afternoon pick-me-up I usually go for a Pret decaf latte – this still gives me that comforting ritualistic boost, but with minimal caffeine.”
Researchers found that more than half (52%) of the nation typically drink two to three cups of coffee every day but 63% like to try different flavours and switch up their order.
Almost half of those surveyed (45%) admitted they couldn’t function properly without their first fix and 54% say having a cup of coffee makes them feel more creative.
The nation’s love affair with coffee doesn’t end in the morning, as 39% of interviewees said they consume multiple cups throughout the day to help them stay focused.
The type of coffee people drink also appears to make a difference as half of the 2,000 adults quizzed by Pret A Manger believe their drink tastes better when made in a shop by a barista.
Briony Raven at Pret A Manger said: “We know coffee isn’t just a drink, it’s a daily ritual. With almost half the nation saying they can’t function without their morning brew, our friendly baristas are here to make sure it’s a great one or two.
“At Pret we’re all about serving great organic coffee made by expertly trained baristas.”
