The Philippines and Indonesia have both issued tsunami alerts subsequent to a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake today. The seismic event occurred near the Mindanao region in the Philippines, as confirmed by the country’s seismology agency. Concerns have arisen about potential tsunami waves reaching heights of up to 3m (10ft) above normal tide levels in certain Philippine areas and up to 1m higher in parts of Indonesia and Palau due to the earthquake’s impact.

In the province of Davao Oriental in the Philippines, structures have sustained damages, adding to the challenges faced by the country still recuperating from a recent 6.9 magnitude earthquake that claimed lives and displaced thousands just last week.

The Philippines draws visitors, including British diving enthusiasts, to its scenic beaches and natural wonders like the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

Authorities are cautioning about a “destructive tsunami” with potentially life-threatening wave heights, advising immediate evacuation for families residing near coastal areas. Images from PTV, the state broadcaster, depict chaotic scenes outside a hospital in Davao City, with patients and staff swiftly evacuating post-earthquake. Some patients have been treated in the hospital’s car park, while buildings, including homes, are being cleared across the Philippines.

The initial tsunami waves could arrive imminently and may persist for hours. Residents in coastal regions of affected provinces are urged by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to relocate to higher ground promptly. Boat owners are also advised to secure their vessels and move away from the shoreline.

The earthquake’s epicenter, located at sea southeast of Manay town in Davao Oriental province, was caused by fault movement at a shallow depth. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu has highlighted possible hazardous waves within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter, with waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) above normal tides likely near the epicenter in the Philippines and smaller waves possible in Indonesia and Palau.

The Philippines, known for its vulnerability to natural disasters due to its position along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is still reeling from a recent 6.9 magnitude earthquake. This latest seismic event underscores the country’s ongoing susceptibility to earthquakes and volcanic activities.
