Residents of a town in Lancashire have been forced to evacuate their homes following a significant gas leak that was accompanied by a noticeable ‘hissing’ noise. The incident, which occurred in the Chapels and Goose House Lane area, prompted authorities to instruct hundreds of households to leave their residences around 2pm.

Emergency response teams, including firefighters, police, and gas network operator Cadent, quickly mobilized to address the situation on the ground. In a statement, Blackburn and Darwen Borough Council confirmed road closures in the affected area and the implementation of diversions to facilitate the investigation into the gas leak.

A spokesperson from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service reported that two fire engines from Darwen Fire Station were summoned to assist Cadent Gas following reports of a significant gas leak on Goose House Lane. The spokesperson urged residents to avoid the area, keep windows and doors closed, and follow diversions put in place.

Cadent, responsible for managing the gas network in Lancashire, dispatched engineers to the site to address third-party damage to a gas pipe and ensure the safety of local residents. Colin Baker, Customer Operations Area Manager for Cadent, emphasized the importance of cooperation with emergency services and urged nearby residents to maintain a safe distance while the emergency work is carried out.

Witnesses at the scene described hearing a distinct hissing sound emanating from the gas leak, with reports indicating that the noise had been audible since the afternoon evacuation. One evacuated resident shared their experience, recounting the overpowering smell of gas upon returning home and the swift response of emergency personnel.

As the situation unfolds, authorities continue to advise residents to keep windows closed as a precaution and stay away from the affected area. Updates and further guidance are expected to be communicated promptly as the investigation progresses.
