“Police Seek Suspects in Mosque Arson Attack”

Police in East Sussex have unveiled pictures of two individuals they are seeking to identify following a suspected arson incident at a mosque. The attack occurred in Peacehaven late on Saturday evening, with footage capturing two masked individuals dousing the mosque entrance with an accelerant before setting it ablaze.

Emergency responders, including Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, swiftly arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those present in the mosque during the attack, although the building and a nearby vehicle sustained substantial damage.

Authorities are actively investigating the incident, classifying it as arson with intent to endanger lives. Detective Inspector Gavin Patch described the attack as “appalling and reckless,” expressing concerns for community safety. The police have released images of the suspects, one of whom was wearing a distinctive black jacket with a white Pre London logo, while the other donned bright red gloves.

Superintendent Rachel Swinney assured the public of an increased police presence in Peacehaven and surrounding areas to offer reassurance and support to the community. Sussex Police emphasized a zero-tolerance stance towards hate crimes and urged individuals to report any information related to the incident by contacting them immediately.

Following the incident, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood urged unity in the face of the alarming attack, emphasizing the need for solidarity across communities. Various political figures, including Mothin Ali and Chris Ward, condemned the arson, emphasizing the importance of standing against violence and hatred.

A spokesperson for the mosque expressed deep sorrow over the attack, emphasizing the community’s values of kindness and mutual support. The mosque will remain closed until the completion of the police investigation.
