The search for a British tourist who went missing in Brazil nearly four months ago has resulted in the discovery of a body. Denis Kopanev, a 33-year-old financial analyst from London, was last seen on CCTV leaving his rented apartment in early June before he vanished. Authorities launched a search after he was reported missing, finding his passport and belongings untouched at his Airbnb.
Denis, a Russian with British citizenship, had been staying in Rio de Janeiro’s Gávea neighborhood. After almost four months, detectives found a body in Tijuca National Park on Tuesday following a 115-day search. The body was recovered from a densely wooded valley, which posed challenges due to cliffs and streams in the area. His wallet, credit card, and other belongings were also found at the scene.
Concerns arose when Denis failed to show up for a planned meeting on June 9. He was last seen in beige trousers, a white shirt, a dark baseball cap, and a jacket. He was supposed to meet an American friend in São Paulo the next day but was never seen alive again. The friend raised the alarm when Denis stopped updating him on his travels.
Denis’ mother, Olga, expressed her feelings of despair and hope as a parent during this ordeal. She described Denis as a caring son with a passion for travel, sports, music, reading, and humor. His best friend, Benone Moura, mentioned that Denis’s disappearance was unusual as he always informed loved ones before traveling.
