Police have provided an update on the individuals wounded in the car attack and stabbing incident at a synagogue in Manchester. Two individuals lost their lives in the tragic event, and authorities have confirmed that an additional four individuals are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals. Greater Manchester Police stated, “Four further people remain in hospital, having suffered a variety of serious injuries and their treatment is ongoing. Our thoughts are with them during this time.”
The assault at a Manchester synagogue earlier today involved armed police fatally shooting the suspect after a car was used to target pedestrians and a person was stabbed on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Following the attack outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall, Greater Manchester Police verified that two individuals were killed.
In a statement later in the day, Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson disclosed that four individuals were hospitalized as a result of the attack, confirming that the incident had been officially classified as an act of terror. Sir Stephen also mentioned that the authorities believed they had identified the perpetrator and that two other individuals had been apprehended in connection with the incident, with ongoing investigations.
Regarding the victims, Sir Stephen stated, “We can confirm that two members of our Jewish community have sadly died as a result of this attack. Following a swift response, armed officers from Greater Manchester Police confronted the assailant, resulting in the suspect being fatally shot within seven minutes of the initial call.”
He further mentioned, “Four additional individuals remain in hospital, having sustained various serious injuries, and our thoughts are with them at this time.” He assured that investigations were progressing rapidly, with active policing measures being carried out across Greater Manchester and neighboring areas for public safety.
Following the incident at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, the vicinity was inundated with numerous police vehicles, fire brigades, and ambulance crews. A police helicopter was seen hovering above the area. Additionally, a bomb disposal unit was dispatched after social media footage suggested that the suspect may have had an explosive device. The individual, who was shot by armed police, appeared to be wearing a ‘bomb belt’.
