A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in Japan has triggered a tsunami warning. Residents reported intense shaking, with one person describing it as the strongest earthquake they have ever felt. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has cautioned of “hazardous” tsunami waves potentially affecting coastal areas within 1,000km of the epicenter, including Japan and Russia.

The earthquake, which occurred at 11:15 pm local time, has prompted tsunami warnings for the northern prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. The epicenter was located 80km off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of 50 km, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency.

Anticipated tsunami heights of up to three meters have led to urgent evacuation advisories for residents in Hokkaido and Aomori. Videos shared on social media show tsunami warnings blaring, urging people to seek higher ground for safety.

The earthquake’s impact was felt across Japan’s north and east regions, causing widespread concern among residents. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
