Police have reported that an earthquake struck part of England overnight, causing a “loud explosion” to be heard. The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed that a 3.3-magnitude earthquake hit Lancashire at 11:23 pm, with reports of tremors felt in areas including Carnforth, Morecambe, Heysham, Burton-in-Kendal, and Arnside.
A spokesperson from Lancaster Police stated on Facebook that they received reports of a loud explosion in the Carnforth area at the same time the earthquake occurred. The earthquake, measuring 3.3 magnitude, occurred near the Lancashire and Cumbria border. Authorities have not received any reports of injuries or damage, but are actively monitoring the situation with support from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service.
The BGS noted that the earthquake was also felt in Blackpool and Cleveleys to the south, and Kendal to the north. Lancashire Police confirmed that there have been no injuries or damages reported due to the earthquake. Sky News mentioned that the tremor was felt across the South Lakes and Lancashire, mainly within a 20-kilometer radius of the epicenter, including areas like Lancashire, Kendal, and Ulverston.
Residents took to social media to share their experiences, with one individual stating it felt stronger than 3.4 magnitude, another mentioning they thought a child had fallen out of bed, and a third person noting that it woke them up in Morecambe.
